It’s your dream wedding.  And then, as you’re walking down the aisle, you see him:  Uncle Roy dressed in cut-offs, a tank top and flip flops.  You desperately pray he won’t crack open a beer during the ceremony.

Or maybe you’re busy planning an outdoor wedding followed by a fun picnic, but you’ve spent most of your time this past week fielding phone calls from relatives who are wondering if neckties are necessary if it is really hot outside.

Save yourself the time and energy, and save everyone the embarrassment of being over- or under-dressed by making “how your guests will dress” part of your wedding planning.  No phone calls are needed, a few simple words on your wedding invitation will suffice.

White Tie
These two little words turn your wedding ultra-formal.  Think Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.  Male guests should wear a formal tuxedo with tails, a white vest and tie.  All your female guests should be wearing floor-length evening gowns.

Black Tie OR Formal
This designation tells male guests that a tuxedo is preferred however, some guests may choose to wear dark suits..  Appropriate formal dressware for women is tea-length gowns and/ or evening dresses.

Semi-Formal
Most weddings expect their guests to wear semi-formal wear:  women wear dresses, and men wear suits.

Dressy Casual
This one is a little difficult for people to understand when they see it on a casual wedding invitation.  Is it dressy or casual?  Can I wear “nice jeans”?  An easy way to remember this is to think ‘business casual’ but no jeans.  No one should wear jeans or shorts to this wedding.  Nice slacks and sport coats for the men are appropriate.  No tie is needed.  Women are free to wear nice slacks or suits or even a casual dress.

Casual Dress
Your guests can wear whatever they want to.  Uncle Roy would be appropriately dressed at this wedding because, thankfully, he is wearing something.

Festive Attire
This is one phrase where you must explain to your guests exactly what you want and should be used only in certain instances.  A great example of festive attire is if you’ve planned a beach wedding followed by a luau-type party. “Island Attire” would be an appropriate addition to your beach wedding invitation

Make your guests part of your wedding plans and you’ll be creating an event that is relaxed and enjoyable for everyone — especially you!
